Post Gastric Bypass Diets
Phase III and IV , Puree  and Soft Foods

During phase III and IV of your post gastric bypass diets pureed and soft foods are added to your meal plans. This is the last phase before getting back to regular foods

During phase III of your post gastric bypass diets you will begin the Puree Diet. You will be able to SLOWLY add foods of a thicker consistency. For the next 1 to 2 weeks food will be like the consistency of baby food. You can also continue to include foods from the Full liquid Diet throughout this stage as well.

Important tips to Remember ......

It is very important to CHEW foods thoroughly! This will help avoid blockage or nausea.

Try 1 to 2 Tbsp of food at a time to see if tolerated.

Each meal should consist of only 2-4 Tbsp (1/8 to 1/4 cup of food).

Remember to always include PROTEIN first at each meal.  You need a minimum of 60 grams of Protein a day.

Keep yourself hydrated! Drink 6-8 cups of water and low calorie beverages between meals. Fat free or 1% milk can be included in this total fluid intake.

Continue to keep track of the amount of protein consumed each day during each phase of your post gastric bypass diets.

As the different phases of your post gastric bypass diets continue these guidelines are always basic guidelines to follow. Making each transition go more smoothly.

The Meat and Milk group include choices that are "complete proteins".  Complete proteins contain all the essential amino acids your body needs. Other food choices are not complete proteins. These  proteins are an important part of your post gastric bypass diets.

Meat Group (examples of 7 grams of protein per serving)

2 Tbsp (1 ounce) cooked pureed lean meats (chicken, fish, and turkey are usually best tolerated now)

1/4 cup (2 ounces) baby food meats

1/4 cup fat free or 1% cottage or ricotta cheese (mash with a fork to smooth consistency)

1/4 cup egg substitute

Milk Group (examples of 8 grams of protein)

1 cup fat free or 1% milk

3/4 cup light or non fat yogurt (no fruit pieces)

1 cup sugar free pudding made with fat free or 1% milk

1 cup strained low fat cream soup (no tomato, no mushroom or corn pieces)

Other foods may be pureed and included in your post gastric bypass diets as tolerated. The Meat and Milk group are outlined because of their protein content.

When starting your puree diet keep these tips in mind.

You may need to add fat free milk, broth or gravies to foods in the blender to make a smooth consistency.

Add non fat powdered milk or protein powders to boost the protein amount.

Try one new food at a time

Portions may need adjusted depending on your individual tolerance. Listen to your body. Stop when you feel full!

A few tips for phase IV.

Your goal is still to get at least 60 grams of protein a day.

Add 1-2 Tbsp of a new food at a time. If you feel nauseated or bloated after eating you may not be ready for this food. wait and try again several days later. Listen to your body.

Cook without added fats.

Moist meats are tolerated better in this phase. Add fat free broths, gravies or cream soups to moisten meats.
